My documentary “Biracial Identity in Black and White” aims to discover what measures the Netherlands has taken in response to political, economic, and social pressures of interracial marriage and the rights of biracial people, through research and interviews leading up to the American and Dutch shared holiday, Loving Day, on June 12th 2025. Loving Day highlights the U.S. Supreme Court decision of Loving vs. The State of Virginia which struck down all remaining anti-miscegenation laws.

Dream it.

After my thesis film, I received an outpouring of messages telling me how they felt seen by my work. I wanted to do more research on biracial identity and discover what the Netherlands biracial identity model looks like compared to what I learned about identities in the U.S.

Build it.

My project is going to require collaboration with universities all over the Netherlands as well as interviews and filming. Through a digestible thirty-minute documentary, I will be able to combine several documentary styles such as:

Participatory — so I can interact as a biracial person with other biracial people

Reflexive — so the audience can see the documentary process and learn alongside me

Poetic — to explore associations and patterns with visuals as an educational aid.

Grow it.

As they say “it takes a village to raise a child” I also believe it takes a village to make a film. So check out the contact link to keep up-to-date with my project.
